Riders on the Storm

If you're wondering what the Hurricane has to do with crime, you're not paying attention to the news. There's gunfire on the streets down there in New Orleans. More than usual. This blog is collecting stories of the horror going on down there, including an excerpt from horror/thriller writer Poppy Z. Brite. Check it out.

Hey, seeing a few kids in the N.O. area with a trunk full of rescued beer got me to thinking about this... If the shit was all underwater anyway, was it really looting? Those shops were all gone, right? Basically washed away.

Also, if the rescue effort is insufficient, and people are worried about food and basic supplies, it's also about survival. The whole concept of crime only goes so far if you're taking stuff to feed the kids, before it washes away in the flood.

I'm not excusing anything, just saying that the looting's not a black-and-white crime issue. In short, shit's real fucked up down there.

Well, yeah, I won't fault anyone for grabbing a loaf of bread or something. Beer though ... it doesn't hurt beer to be under water. That's stealing. And I'm more concerned with the roving gangs of folks ripping all the guns out of Wal-Mart.

Yeah, it's like Judgement Night down there. Or a zombie movie, but replace the zombies with deep, filthy water. Lawless.

But now Bush is sending in the troops about a week late, so I'm sure everything will be right as rain. So to speak.
